How Auto Body Shops Can Leverage the MPCA Environmental Improvement Loans to Transition to Water-Based Paints
As collision repair standards advance and environmental regulations change, auto shop owners face a critical decision; upgrade spray booth equipment to modern standards or risk falling behind in efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
For many independent body shops, moving from conventional solvent-based paint systems to water-based paint represents a major operational leap. Beyond the environmental benefits, such as reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, water-based paints deliver cleaner color blends, improved OEM matching and a safer workplace for technicians.
However, transitioning requires capital investment in dedicated equipment upgrades, including high-airflow paint booth retrofits, specialized spray guns, stainless-steel fluid lines, and advanced drying fan systems. Fortunately, state resources specifically the Small Business Environmental Improvement Loan Program is designed to make this essential upgrade achievable and affordable.
Understanding the Small Business Environmental Improvement Loan Program
The Small Business Environmental Improvement Loan Program assists small businesses in funding capital improvements that prevent or reduce pollution or maintain compliance with air quality standards. Because converting an auto body collision repair shop from solvent-based paints to water-based paints directly curbs hazardous air pollutants, these equipment investments qualify for zero-interest financing under the program.
Key Program Highlights:
• Zero percent interest
• Flexible repayment period of up to seven years
• Loan amount from $1,000 to $75,000
• Flexibility in the types of collateral accepted
• Applications are accepted and awarded continuously throughout the year.
Three Steps to Secure Funding
• Work with your spray booth vendor and paint distributor to assess your current airflow and drying capabilities. Identify whether a full booth replacement or a targeted blower retrofit is required.
• Outline how the conversion will lower your facility’s VOC output, hazardous waste and reduce paint usage through higher transfer efficiency.
• Prepare financial records alongside quotes from equipment vendors and complete the application for credit. Submit applications to smallbizfunding.pca@state.mn.us. The small business loan program will review the environmental benefits and guide you through the application process.
