Vendor Affinity Program Spotlight: Express Diagnostics
by Alana Quartuccio
Express Diagnostics is not your average ADAS calibration and diagnostic company. The team behind this rapidly-growing operation takes great pride in being a go-to source for everything ADAS-related and beyond.
It all began in 2019 when two like-minded industry professionals, Steve Piro and Joe Vance, decided to put their heads together in recognition of the growing ADAS trend. Both have strong backgrounds in the industry; Piro owned a shop for 25 years that specialized in high-end European vehicles and fleets, while Vance was a regional manager for a major glass company. The company started on Long Island in New York and grew rapidly from there.
“A big part of our success was hiring the right people to help grow the company,” Piro says. “In fact, one of the best early decisions we made was declining paying ourselves in order to invest in building a team, with the proper tools and infrastructure. When we began hiring and training techs, that’s when things really started to take off. Today, I’m proud to say that we have a team including regional managers, CFOs and human resources, as well as all the software and hardware necessary to get the job done right. We have everything and anything that it takes to run a successful automotive technology service company.”
One of those early hires was Kevin Hemingway, who came on board a year after the company got off the ground. His strong automotive and technical background helped expand the company in the Northeast region – including Massachusetts. Currently, Express Diagnostics has a local team covering a range from New Bedford up to Worcester and Springfield. “We handle it all – everything from wire repair, ADAS calibrations, diagnostics, programming,” Hemingway explains. “We like to say we are a one-stop shop.”
The Express Diagnostics team recognizes the changes constantly happening in the ADAS world. “We pride ourselves on being on top of the needs of the industry, staying ahead and making sure we have everything we need,” Hemingway says. “We’re not afraid of a challenge. We take on the cars that many shy away from, like BMWs and Mercedes. Our techs aren’t afraid to get elbows deep and look forward to expanding their own knowledge. We are up to date on OE. We’re not afraid to invest in that expensive scanner so we can provide service to our customers and our partners. We stay ahead of the trend so we are ready for whatever vehicle we get a call on.”
They are also certain to place the right people in the right roles. “There’s a strategic reason behind everyone in the company and the role they play,” reports Piro. The team includes I-CAR certified technicians and the company has numerous ASE certifications and are Rivian certified. Express Diagnostics also invests in their technicians’ extended automotive education and training through classes, specific hands-on courses, workshops and seminars.
Serving the customer is absolutely first and foremost in everything they do. The team takes the time to listen and hear what customers need from their services the most.
“One of the core values Joe and I implemented early on is listening to the customer,” Piro relays. “What does a customer need? I think that question is often forgotten.” They work to provide personal service and that service is never farther than a day away.
“We really listen to the customer. We will always do our best to adjust to the needs of the specific customer. If a shop were to call me at 4pm on a Friday with a customer in a bind, we would make it happen. There’s not a lot of red tape to cut to make customers happy. I preach it to everyone: Don’t chase money; chase customer satisfaction. The money will work itself out if you have a happy customer. I think that is often forgotten in business.”
Express Diagnostics is committed to making sure their customers know they are much more than a vendor, but rather a partner. They recently came on board with MABA as a Gold Sponsor in its Vendor Affinity Program to further align themselves with the shops in the area. “We treat all of our customers as partners,” Hemingway insists. “If our customers have an issue, it’s our issue and our job to alleviate that issue. That’s the way we look at it. And the best way to show our support is by working with associations like MABA. The education MABA puts forth and the fight the association fights is one worth having. We want everyone to know we are more than a vendor – we are here to help.”
Being part of the association helps the Express Diagnostics team become aware of the latest industry issues affecting their customers. Piro observes,“By being part of the association, we are getting educated to put ourselves in a position to offer better support. We’re able to come to them with information before they even know about it.”
The company continues to stay on the path toward further growth. Currently, Express Diagnostics serves 10 states on the East Coast spanning as south as Florida and as east as Kentucky. Depending on the state, the company operates via brick and mortar facilities where they handle all the diagnostics and mechanical work in addition to having technicians bring all the necessary equipment and targets to do calibration work on site at a customer shop. Adding a brick and mortar facility to Massachusetts is on the short-term goal list. “We hope that no later than 2027 we’ll have a brick and mortar location here in the state,” Piro predicts.
